In this segment of Creative Points of View with Philip and Leah you will hear a fascinating real live story told by me, Leah. The story occurred when I was 16 years old and studying in England. It is about the kindness of a very big celebrity who helped me when the plane I took to South Africa from England almost crashed in France. The funny twist of the story is that I had no idea that he was a very famous celebrity. Why not listen to the story and find out who he is and why I am forever thankful to him. At the very beginning of the video for a very short time you will hear part of a piano piece that I composed at about the same time that this story occurred.

Miley Ray Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus; November 23, 1992) is an American pop singer, songwriter and television and film actress who rose to fame after starring as the title character in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. Following the success of Hannah Montana, a soundtrack CD was released in October 2006 featuring Cyrus on eight songs from the show. *Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) set the standard for celebrity portraiture. From the 1940s until the 1970s his portraits of actors, intellectuals and politicians appeared on the covers and pages of the biggest magazines in Europe and the US. He arrived in New York in 1940, with little English, no money, no contacts and a camera. Within two years his work appeared on the cover of Life magazine, beginning a 30 year association with the magazine. Life published 101 covers by Halsman – a record unmatched by any other photographer .

Halsman grew up in Riga, Latvia, and began his photography career in Paris in the 1930s, contributing to Vogue and other fashion magazines. He shunned the old fashioned portrait style of soft focus in favour of dark sharp images and soon gained a reputation as one of the best portrait photographers in France. However, with the invasion of France by Hitler’s troops he fled to America having obtained a visa with the help of his friend Albert Einstein.

Halsman’s big break in New York came when he met Connie Ford, a model who agreed to pose for him in exchange for prints for her portfolio. When Halsman showed the resulting pictures of Ford against an American flag to the cosmetics company Elizabeth Arden they used the image to launch a national advertising campaign for “Victory Red” lipstick. A year later he was commissioned by Life to photograph new hat designs. His portrait of a model in a Lily Daché hat was the first of his many covers for Life.

In the 1950s Halsman photographed a group of comedians from the TV channel NBC including Bob Hope and Groucho Marx. Each comedian performed while Halsman shot pictures, sometimes taking 300 frames in a single session. Photographing the comedians in action inspired Halsman to produce his famous “jump” pictures, which capture noteworthy people, from Richard Nixon to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, mid-air, jumping for the camera. Halsman felt that asking a person to jump distracted them from posing for the camera and so revealed more of their natural personality. A special section of the exhibition is devoted to Halsman’s “jump” portraits.

Of all the great photographers of his time, Halsman belongs most completely to the magazine era. His subjects create a vivid picture of prosperous American society in the middle years of this century and he captures the laughter, high spirits and glamour of his time, as well as its intense emotions and true optimism.

When Ko Ching-Man (Kate Tsui) wins a beauty a pageant, she quickly leaps to stardom and joins the entertainment circle, despite the protests of her mother, Cheung Lai-Hung (Kingdom Yuen), a retired actress. Lai-Hung knows that the life of a celebrity is not what it seems, and tries to protect her daughter from the harsh reality. Ko-Ching soon meets fellow actress Cally (Sharon Chan), and the two quickly become best friends. Cally is dating her assistant production friend Deacon (Chris Lai). Ko-Ching soon finds out that Cally pretends to be rich in front of the media by borrowing money from the bank and opening multiple credit cards. Ko-Ching promises not to tell anybody. However, when the two best friends land roles in a movie, Cally wants to eliminate Ko-Ching’s part so that she will be the main star. Leading actress Keung Chi-Fung (Christine Ng), once a bitter rival of Ko-Ching’s mother, exposes Cally’s lies and reveals the truth behind Cally’s supposed wealth to the media.

Chi-Fung sees this as an opportunity to eliminate two rising stars and she begins to take Ko-Ching under her wing, slowly planning to bring her into a moral downfall. Chi-Fung pretends to be kind, but as they grow closer, Chi-Fung begins tempting Ko-Ching with drugs and money. Under Chi-Fung’s influence, Lai-Hung begins to see a dramatic change in her daughter’s character. Ko-Ching begins using dirty tactics to hurt Cally, such as stealing Deacon away from her. Eventually, Ko-Ching realizes Chi-Fung is just pretending to be her friend, just like Cally was.

As Ko-Ching becomes more and more scheming, she no longer trusts anyone and thinks everyone has betrayed her. Everyone is shocked by Ko-Ching’s sudden change is personality, from Cally, to Chin-Fung, to her friend Kit, and even a tabloid writer that has always admired Ko-Ching.

As Ko-Ching’s acting career takes off, Chi-Fung becomes desperate for everlasting beauty and injects her face with botox in an attempt to slow the aging process. However, Chi-Fung’s face begins changing shape and her cosmetic endorsements with many companies are cut, being replaced by Ko-Ching. Even the best actress award, that she has won for years, are slipping out of Chi-Fung’s hands. To vent her anger, Chi-Fung vows to plunge Ko-Ching into a pit of despair and pain.

The three actresses struggle to become the most popular. Who will come out on top?
